Weight Matters: Keeping Your Pet Healthy & Active

Obesity is now considered the number one cause of all preventable disease in cats and dogs in North America. The risks for certain types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease -painful and costly health problems- are greatly reduced simply by keeping your kitty or pooch within a healthy weight range.

Course Outcome
Learn about why your pet's weight matters.

Recognizing if your pet is overweight is half the challenge.  Cats and dogs come in so many different shapes and sizes, it's hard to know what's a healthy weight just at a glance. At your pet's wellness visit, Dr. Clark or Dr. Kanouse will evaluate their body condition score by palpating for certain physical markers. If your friend is a breed prone to weight related diseases, your vet will talk you through things to watch for at home.

If your furbaby is obese, the most important action you can take to help them live longer and pain free is to get them down to sensible weight. That usually involves several changes in both your daily routines.

Our support for your pet doesn't end when you leave the Brook Farm clinic. We're just a phone call away when you need help understanding your pet's diet plan, when they're struggling to get more active,  or you're concerned by changes in weight.
